A U.S. Air Force jet carrying one pilot crashed in Iraq on Monday, the military said.

The F-16CG was supporting coalition ground forces when it went down about 1:35 p.m., about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad in Anbar province, the military said in a brief statement that contained no information about the cause of the crash or the fate of the pilot.

Mohammed Al-Obeidi, an Iraqi who lives in the nearby town of Karmah, said he saw the jet flying up and down erratically before it nose-dived and exploded in a farm field.

He said other U.S. warplanes rushed to the crash site and were circling around it.

U.S. Jet Fighter Crashes Near Baghdad

By KHALID AL-ANSARY and JOHN O’NEIL
Published: November 27, 2006
BAGHDAD, Nov. 27 — An American fighter jet crashed near Baghdad today, as the lifting of a three-day curfew in the capital was marked by scattered violence, including the kidnapping of three guards from the Municipal Building in the city’s center.

In a brief statement, the military said that an Air Force F-16 operating in support of combat troops in Anbar province about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad went down this afternoon. There was no word on the fate of the pilot, who was the only one on board.

The Associated Press quoted an eyewitness, Mohammed al-Obeidi, who lives in the nearby town of Karmah, who said by telephone that the jet had been flying erratically, moving up and down, before it dived into a farm field and exploded.

Mr. Obeidi said that other American planes rushed to the scene and were circling the wreckage.

Anbar province, in the country’s west, has been the center of the Sunni insurgency since 2003, and has consistently been the area producing the greatest number of American casualties.

In recent months, casualties have also risen in Baghdad as American troops have moved more aggressively to try to stem the spiraling sectarian violence there. A statement issued by the military today said that three American soldiers were killed in the capital on Sunday during fighting with insurgents.

Baghdad had been under a strict curfew imposed after a series of car bombs killed more than 200 people on Thursday in the Shiite area called Sadr City, although some revenge attacks on Sunni mosques were reported on Friday and mortar fire killed at least two people near a Shiite mosque on Sunday.

The Interior Ministry reported that American forces opened fire on civilians in the Husseiniya neighborhood of Baghdad overnight, killing five and wounding eight, and that gunmen wounded seven Iraqi policemen in an ambush in the city’s south. The American military did not issue a statement on this incident, but said that four civilians were wounded, including three boys, by mortar fire from U.S. forces directed at insurgents in the western city of Ramadi.

The curfew was lifted this morning, and scattered incidents of violence were reported.

The kidnapping of three guards from the Municipal Building in the city center is the latest of a series of brazen daylight abductions. The Interior Ministry said that two other guards were wounded; Reuters reported that one was killed.

American soldiers also responded today along with Iraqi forces to a large oil fire south of Baghdad started by a bomb planted beneath a pipeline, the military said.

Iraq’s president, Jalal Talabani, left Baghdad today for Iran for talks on security that had been postponed by the Sadr City bombings, news services said.

US F-16 goes down in Iraq

The US military has said it is investigating why the F-16 crashed near Fallujah (

A US F-16 fighter aircraft has gone down near the city of Fallujah in western Iraq.

The US airforce said the plane's pilot was missing and an investigation into the cause of the incident had been launched.

However, and Iraqi journalist said local residents had reported seeing the F-16 being shot down.

Muthana Shakir, an Iraqi journalist in Baghdad told Al Jazeera: "We got credible news saying at 2pm on Monday a US F-16 warplane was downed in al-Garma neighbourhood near the western Iraqi city of Falluja."

"The warplane was downed over arable lands. Witnesses confirmed that the plane was fired on by gunmen's rockets when it was flying on low altitude."

William Caldwell, a US military spokesman, said he would be surprised if the jet was shot down as the F-16's fly very fast and have not encountered any weapons capable of taking them down in Iraq.

A spokesman said that the aircraft was lost while it was flying in support of ground operations taking place in Fallujah.

US troops are reported to have surrounded the crash-site.

Violence continues

Elsewere in Iraq, sectarian violence continued on Monday after the government lifted a three-day curfew imposed on Baghdad at the weekend.

An interior ministry source said that five people were killed and at least eight wounded during a US army raid in Husainiya, a mainly Shia area on the northern outskirts of Baghdad.

Nassar al-Rubaie, a Shia politician from the Sadr movement, said that 15 civilians were killed and 20 wounded.

The US military said it was checking the reports and made no further comment.

Several people were also reported killed in the cities of Tel Afer and Ramadi.

Iraqi police also found five bodies dumped in Baghdad on Monday.

The US army also reported that three soldiers were killed on Sunday.

U.S. F-16 crashes in Iraq, pilot dead - witnesses

FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - An F-16 fighter on a combat mission near Baghdad crashed on Monday, and the pilot appeared to have died after ejecting.

A local journalist who shot film of the wreckage of the plane after it came down north of Falluja in Iraq's western Anbar province said he was in no doubt the pilot was dead.

The U.S. military confirmed the crash but said it had no information on the fate of the pilot or the cause of the crash.

The film showed the bloodied and motionless body of what appeared to be a man in a flight suit wearing a parachute harness lying in a field strewn with the wreckage of the plane.

"A United States Air Force F-16CG engaged in support of coalition ground combat operations crashed approximately 20 miles northwest of Baghdad today at about 1:35 p.m. Baghdad time (1035 GMT) with one pilot on board," a U.S. military statement said.

"A board will be convened to investigate the incident."

Residents in the town of Garma said the crash site had been surrounded by U.S. troops.

While helicopter crashes in Iraq are not uncommon, it is rare for a fixed-wing aircraft to come down.

In January 2005 10 British servicemen were killed when a Hercules transport plane was brought down by ground-to-air fire. In May that year two U.S. fighter jets crashed after apparently colliding in mid-air.
